The legendary Ultra Primes have been developed over years of collaboration between Arri and Carl Zeiss in Germany. A large team of mathematicians and physicists have translated the latest scientific research; the objective was to create lenses that for the first time completely unify all of the optimal characteristics of the ultimate lens – the Ultra Prime..
Focus, Contrast, Colour Saturation, Colour Uniformity, Compactness and High Speed with very low aperture-induced focus shift, they were the characteristics that the Ultra Prime lenses were designed and built to optimise. Additionally, close-focus performance was also on the optimisation list, where historically conventional optical lens designs have been a weak offering.
In general, lenses achieve peak performance at the focus setting which they have been designed and optimised for, usually this is infinity. Less than infinity would reduce the optical performance, with an increased image area curvature and increased aperture aberrations. So due to these reductions in peak performance lens manufacturers limit the minimum close-focus setting mechanically, so the user can’t push the lens too far in to the area of reduced performance. However, the Ultra Prime lenses do things a little differently.. Arri and Carl Zeiss designed and perfected an effective means against this undesirable, it is called Floating Elements.
Floating Elements or Floating Lens Elements does exactly what it sounds like, it is a technological design where lens groups simultaneously move in relation to each other during focusing, thus correcting image area curvature as it moves. Wow! The Floating Elements design has a significant bearing on the overall optical design of the lens and also the highly precise construction of the now mechanical lens components. These unique technologies are both implemented across the entire range of Ultra Prime lenses, allowing for outstanding close-focus / minimum focus distances never seen before.
Generally, lenses change the distance of the complete internal optical assembly in relation to the film plane when focusing. In real world environments this design has major optical performance disadvantages such as the drifting of gearing for iris and focus, also the displacement of the physical center of gravity position.
Panny Hire LLC Ultra Primes avoid these major optical disadvantages due to their genuine internal focusing design, the external position of the physical lens remains totally constant through the entire range of focus. Not only that, instead of moving the entire internal optical assembly with a large drive gearing mechanism, only very small and incredibly lightweight lens groups are moved in the interior of the lens, this delivers substantially increased focus sensitivity and precise control.
New materials were developed specifically for Ultra Prime lenses, to perfect the suppression of stray light and increase colour saturation. The end result is pure and intense colours, even at full aperture, which is unheard of before.
A crucial characteristic in the optical design was a high MTF value of 10 line pairs per mm, this frequency range is directly linked to the crispness of the actual image. The entire range of Ultra Prime lenses feature over 90% MTF at this spatial frequency, this delivers an incredibly uniform brightness across the complete and entire image area and increases the crispness and sharpness of the image.
Colour Fringing? There is no perceivable colour fringing whatsoever.. For the first time in the history of lens design the Ultra Prime lenses were corrected for close-focus / minimum focus and infinity, instead of just infinity (which is usually the sole concern). The end result of the above design technology – the highest quality optical standard and performance across the entire focus range.
Ultra Primes feature an entirely new iris design which is practically free of hysteresis distortion. Featuring a nine blade design (the 135mm is a ten blade) with finer rounded aperture contours, this delivers a finer and more rounded shallow bokeh instead of angular. The end result is a more natural and less mechanical depiction of unsharp / shallow light sources.
